When you hear the word self-improvement, do you think of physical self-care? Does your mind conjure images of spa days, expensively tailored clothes, designer bags, manicures, and pedicures?

Self-improvement goes beyond physical self-care.

Although self-improvement can mean physical self-care, the type we want to focus on is our spiritual self-improvement through displaying godly character traits. There is nothing wrong with physical self-care to increase your self-esteem and confidence.

However, spiritual self-improvement goes beyond the tangible world and into eternity. Self-improvement is not selfish in God’s eyes but rather encouraged through His word to become more like His Son, Jesus Christ.

Self-Discipline – Self-discipline is doing what you know you should, even when you do not feel like doing it. It can also encompass self-control, controlling your reactions and behaviors. For example, you can include attending worship services, studying God’s word, showing up at work, working diligently, watching what you say to others, and behaving in a godly manner.

Persistence – Persistence, or stick-to-it-iveness, will carry you far. Think about the disciples after Jesus ascended; the men were persistent in sharing God’s message with the world, even under the threat of death. Maybe there is a goal you want to reach, but it seems impossible. With self-discipline and persistence, you will achieve your goal.

Reliability – Are you reliable? Or do people describe you as flaky? People do not trust you with even the smallest tasks when you are unreliable, continuously show up late, or procrastinate. The Bible tells us that when you are faithful with a few things, you will be put in charge of many things. (See Matthew 25:21-23)

Good Judgement – Wisdom is available for all who ask. Yet, how many of us have asked God for sound judgment and wisdom in all areas of our lives? Discernment in both the secular and spiritual realms is critical for making good decisions. You must be able to make decisions quickly and calmly. For major life events, seeking God’s direction will save you heartache.

Kindness – You should always treat others the way you would want to be treated. Kindness is a trait that everyone can display. God shows mercy on us by forgiving our sins, having a personal relationship with Him, and allowing us to live with Him for eternity as His Son or Daughter. Yet, we struggle to show mercy to others. Kindness and compassion are character traits you will need to practice for spiritual self-improvement.

Integrity and Honesty – God is open about how important honesty and integrity are in the Bible. There are countless stories about treacherous or immoral people who lie to others to get their way.

As Luke reminds us, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” (Luke 16:10, NIV) Lying can be a compulsive behavior. Reach out for help if you struggle with lying, dishonesty, or gossip.

Being the man or woman God intended you to be.
